Important Facts About National Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year, the United States observes National Hispanic Heritage Month, but what is it exactly and why is it celebrated? Don’t worry, we have the answers! Here’s everything you need to know about how it was established, and why it is important to celebrate it.

When is it commemorated?

National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15. If only Christmas would last as long as this. 

What is being celebrated?

National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. How did it start?

The observation of National Hispanic Heritage Week started in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson. Have you ever heard: “Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or to lose”? Yep, he said that.

How has it changed since it was created?

It was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period and enacted into law on August 17, 1988. 

Why does it begin in the middle of September?

September 15 is a significant day because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30-day period. Yes, this is a big month for Hispanic Americans!

How do people celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month?

Okay, you got me. I want to celebrate, but how? The official government website typically keeps a calendar of highlighted activities hosted throughout the U.S.—from concerts to art festivals and parades. A majority of the festivities held throughout the U.S. are family-friendly and occur at the local level, and many are free.
