Sojern at Rimini for TTG: All the new trends in tourism marketing

The current scenario

As of the beginning of October 2022, searches for domestic flights within Italy are +3% higher compared to pre-Covid (October 2019), demonstrating continued interest in traveling closer to home, but international flight searches are down -10% compared to the same period. But if we look at the trend from January 2022 to today, domestic flights mark -3% and international ones +21% demonstrating strong overseas travel intent for the low season. Same declines compared to pre-covid for hotel search in Italy. The domestic market is down 59% and the international market 71%.  However, even for hotels, if we compare the beginning of the year, i.e. from January 2022, things are looking up, marking a growth of 9% in the timid Italian market, and a definite positive increase of 62% for the international one.

The traveler's behavior is changing and he is becoming more informed. For the month of October 41% of the total flight searches for travel are oriented to Italy, 13% are looking to travel within November 2022 and 10% are looking to travel within December. Further demonstrating that travelers have become more opportunistic and unpredictable, Sojern’s data shows they are often booking last minute trips with 26% of domestic travelers and 19% of international travelers searching for flights between only 2-7 days ahead of their travel departure dates. Looking at trip duration based on flight searches from the last 60 days the majority of domestic travelers (39%) are planning short trips between 2-3 days while international travelers (38%) are looking to stay for longer, up to a week between 4-7 days.  Additionally  10% of all foreigners searching for flights to Italy in the last 14 days are thinking of spending the Christmas holidays in Italy,  and 9% of Italians are thinking of a domestic trip within December in which they have to take a flight to another city.  If we look also  at searches for hotels to reach -evidently by another means- 7% of Italians and foreigners who are already looking online at where to spend their December holidays.

Italy is the destination most sought after by Italians themselves (25.5%), followed by the US market (12%), according to Sojern's analysis of flight searches, and those who want to leave are mainly travelers leaving from Milan (7%), followed by London (5.4%) and Rome (5.3%). On the other hand, if we look at hotel searches in Italy, the US (30.3%) market comes first, followed by Italian (13.5%) and French (11.2%).

Pay on Stay

The picture that Sojern can give is, as always, detailed and is enriched with new features that give tourist destinations and hotels new and detailed investment possibilities, especially in such an unstable time of recovery in which costs are extremely important precisely because of the current energy crisis and the repercussions it has on tourism sector spending.

In this context, Sojern, in addition to serving the giants of hotel tourism, has identified a solution for small independent hotels: 'Pay on stay'.  The same technology developed for the marketing campaigns of the large chains is applied for small hotels, which are offered highly customized advertising on multiple channels geared towards enabling potential customers to land a reservation at the hotel. Program includes services and information on the local market and competitors, and Pay on The Stay customers collaborate with Sojern on the overall distribution strategy to orient the customer, paying only once they have stayed. In other words, Sojern takes the risk of running the campaign with the certainty of getting the result.

Internet and new TV: advertising is active abroad. Did you know?

Among the innovations that distinguish Sojern in Italy is the inclusion of Connected Television, better known in Italy as Smart TV, in its marketing advertising programs.  An indispensable element of the tourism marketing of the future if we consider that 39% of millennials' video enjoyment is through CTV. The State of CTV Advertising Report 2021, MAGNA 2021, "Tremor Video CTV Advertiser Insights 2021" research shows that 40% of global video impressions are occurring on CTV and growing at a rate of 31% per year increasing brand awareness by 59%. 72% of branding agencies also claim that CTV now reaches audiences more effectively than linear TV.

Space and content on CTV can capture international communities in the US, for example, which as we have seen from the latest booking research, is currently one of the most vibrant markets for Italy.

Visit Tuscany Case History

The Visit Tuscany team, in partnership with Sojern, ran a six-week online video campaign in 2021 with the aim of increasing brand awareness and recognition of Tuscany's tourism brand. The campaign demonstrated a positive increase in consideration for the destination Tuscany.

Tuscany is already known worldwide for its landscapes, history, monuments, art and local hospitality.

The Visit Tuscany team wanted to represent all that Tuscany has to offer travelers through a video campaign. In summer 2021, Sojern activated the six-week campaign in conjunction with a brand lift study - a study on improving brand perception - in cooperation with OnDevice Research. The campaign reached users in Germany, France and the UK, who showed an interest in traveling to the region and might consider Tuscany as a destination in the future. After watching the video, users were submitted to a questionnaire with the objective of measuring how their perception had changed after watching the videos.

The campaign generated interest in Tuscany in all three markets. OnDevice Research interviewed a sample of 600 users and 7 out of 10 users demonstrated an intent to perform an online research action on the destination, visit the website, search for tourist services and make a reservation for Tuscany as a result of the campaign. A 7% improvement in the consideration of Tuscany as a tourist destination was demonstrated. The campaign also surpassed the 70% video completion rate target with an average of 74%.

For those wishing to learn more At TTG 2022 Sojern will present together with Visit Tuscany the actions and results of the collaboration in the field of digital marketing during the conference "Visittuscany.com a success story: Brand Awareness & Smart TV with Sojern" Together with the director of Fondazione Sistema Toscana, Francesco Palumbo, they will talk about how actions on brand awareness can also be measured and about Smart TV as a new digital marketing channel for destinations.

Case History: Friuli Venezia Giulia Tourism

The Friuli Venezia Giulia Turismo team, in partnership with Sojern, activated a multi-channel marketing campaign focused on qualified traffic to the destination website and partner sites using tourism data and highly profiled audiences. During the campaign, Sojern generated an increase in visits to the turismofvg.it website of more than 50% and, of all users reached, 1 in 4 visited at least one partner site. This work began in the autumn of 2021 on display and video channels with the aim of promoting the Region's food and wine products by driving qualified traffic to the destination's website and, secondly, by generating visits to the websites of its food and wine partners, so that users would find out more about the special products. The region is known for its prized San Daniele ham, Montasio cheese and DOC wines such as Collio, Colli orientali del Friuli and Karst. Turismo Friuli Venezia Giulia at the end of the campaign recognises that before working with Sojern, online marketing was focused on brand awareness and very little on conversions, whereas now it can monitor conversions on the site and seriously recognise the success driven by the destination's marketing programmes.

Pay on Stay

Internet e nuove tv: all’estero l’advertising è attivo.

Case History Visit Tuscany

Case History:  Turismo Friuli Venezia Giulia
